Calgary 2015 Competition

Welcome to this page, and to the Calgary 2015 Birding Competition (AKA “Big Year”!) organised by Nature Calgary.

When we signed up for this event, we decided to look for ways to focus on different species and locations throughout each month of 2015.  We decided to ask eBird for access to their (enormous) Basic Dataset (EBD) – which they kindly allowed.  Now, it’s possible that some people may get a bit competitive about this Big Year thing, but us… well maybe a little!  However, we want to share our analysis with any of you who are also taking part.

Some species are extremely common, and while we enjoy seeing them, you don’t need us to help you find, for instance, a House Sparrow or a Black-capped Chickadee.

Other species are rarities – some have only been reported once in this region.  The first thing to say about that is we take no responsibility for sending you on a weeks-long fruitless search; we will let you know the possibilities, though.  And the likelihood of success (or failure)!

Because birding should be fun. And part of that fun comes from the sheer unpredictability.  Perhaps we will give you a “Nemesis Bird”, that species you just cannot track down, no matter how many times and places you try.  However, when you do finally see it, the feeling is so good. You’re welcome!

No doubt the contents of this section will evolve – partly, we hope, in response to your comments and suggestions.  Initially, the main data presentation is a table of species reported in the circle for “this” month, with some simple analytical snippets, and a link to a dynamic eBird Species Observations map.
