I have a question for you I have a downy woodpecker that has been around my my place for nearly 2 yrs. This Past summer it had a partner, of which I haven’t seen them together lately at all.
Yesterday I was very surprised when I saw it at the birdfeeder with a much smaller identical one. I was able to observe them for some time. The smaller one was approx just a titch over half the size of the regular bird.
I’m inclined to think it is a “youth” … but this late in the year?… is this normal?….or something I don’t know?
Have you considered the two being Hairy Woodpeckers? Downy Woodpeckers are much smaller than them, and that might explain it. They look almost identical except for their size. What is the size about of the two?
Josiah has a point, they could be Hairy Woodpeckers and then this new one is a Downy.
Do you have photos? If so, I would love to see them, and it may help me ID your bird.
Ring-billed Gull?
Ring-billed or Herring Gull would be my guess.

You’re right, that is hard… I don’t really know but I’ll guess Herring Gull.
